PostSubject: Thoughts on Chapter 3, Page 52   Mon Apr 15, 2013 12:50 pm

I have a lot to type, so here's a TL;DR version of what i'm about to ask:

1) Why's Max acting surprised that he can't tell?
2) What's Mr. Spender mean by that "my mind is in a delicate balance" comment?
3) What's "Rights of first refusal" mean?
4) Is the plunger going to be used and by whom will it be used by?
4.5) On a side note, if it's used enough to free him, will we see Mr. Racist Whale Frog again?

Okay, question time:

1. (not the most important question, but...) Max has already been informed (near the end of chapter one) that ghosts are, like, "Totally a secret, okay?" So why is he acting "surprised" that he can't tell anyone. I know Max doesn't really care, but I'd think he would at least know this already.

2. What does Mr. Splendiforous mean by a delicate balance? It's been confirmed by Zack that spectrals can have multiple tools and mediums can as well. Why would he (Mr. SparePants) be concerned over getting another tool, but not about whether or not Issac or the others get multiple tools? I believe that either:
............(a) Mr. Sparticus's spirit (likely in him, since he's saying that his mind is unbalanced) hates him aggressively and is messing with him,
............(b) His spirit has some sort of "mixing" power with other spirits (unconfirmed, and I'm leaning to a "light" spirit, but this is still possible), and he has to control it,
............(c) Mr. Stampede is actually a non spectral (this is a theory me and my friend have worked up) but his glasses are synthetically created to be able to see the world of the supernatural. I really am doubting this as of now, or...
............(d) Mr. Spork has recently been involved in a freakish paranormal incident with his spirit/tool/whatever, and is still recovering.

3. What does "rights of first refusal" mean? Does it mean he has to accept whatever is given to him (i.e. he doesn't have the right to refuse it) or does it mean that the tool isn't to be distributed to anyone without supervision from Mr. Spelunking (the latter idea is what I'm going for at this point)?

4. Either we're going to get a new spectral (one with blue energy) using the toilet plunger, the kid that went bonkers (mentioned by Issac in chapter 1) has blue energy and he'll wind up using the toilet plunger, or Isaac will eventually wind up using that plunger somehow. I just can't see Mr. Racist Whale Frog not popping up again. I can imagine it happening at a very inconvenient time, too, like in the middle of a battle against something bigger, the Racist Whale Frog is freed from the plunger.

As far as the Mr. Spelunker "delicate balance" thing, it seems that his glasses are his tool, and that there is a "light" and a "dark" associated with them (when he's charging up back in Chapter 1) so that probably has to do with the balance. I'm guessing two spirits possessing each lens, at this moment.

Also, I don't think anyone's going to end up with the plunger.

And what Mr. Spender meant by rights of first refusal was that Isabel isn't supposed to just offer a tool to her grandfather, she should bring it to the club first. She broke protocol slightly.

For number 2, I think the most logical answer is simply that he does not want to become the puppet of a spirit, and therefore cannot have too many spirits at once because he won't be able to avoid it.
For number 3, its like a "the lions share" sort of thing. If he did have the right to first refusal, then they'd bring him every tool they made before anyone else got a chance to claim the tools, and he'd be able to say "yes I want that one" (non-refusal) or "no I don't want that one someone else can have it" (refusal). Essentially the same as first pick of the tools, except its a refusal because he didnt want it.

I also like to point out that it doesn't matter if your a medium or a tool, the connection is in the mind as stated on the pages explaining the visions to meet with your spirit. THat comment about his mental balance does not clue he is a tool or a medium. It does though bring up a notion he might have more than one connection to keep balance with, maybe a light and a dark spirit?

Okay, so - upon further review - I believe that Mr. Spender's yellow spectral energy is the control of light. It's too painfully obvious at this point:

1. In the first chapter, the lights in the room were dimmed.

2. His glasses are shades, which dim light.

3. The glasses are in the icon of the Paranatural banner, along with the other tools, meaning that they are his tools. This has already been established fanon-wise, I believe.

4. When he was charging up to attack the bat spirit in the first chapter, the swirls of BLACK and YELLOW indicate a control over light.

Mixing all this together, I believe...

He can either manipulate light sources/light in general to be darker, brighter, or different colored (there are possibly other things he can do - but I'm not imaginative enough to predict them right now).

I think you're getting a bit mixed up. What it seems to be is that color is specific to the Spectral. Max is black, Isaac is blue, etc, but the "color" isn't what makes it special. Any spirit of any "type" (storm, magnet, paper) can match up with any spectral as long as the color of the energy matches up. Like, a storm spirit with black spectral energy could still pair with Max.

There are still a few things unanswered (Like when Max wonders how a paint spirit would possess a paintbrush and a paper spirit would possess a book just by coincidence) but as of now this is what seems to be the case.

Interestingly, the eraser spirit possessed a pencil, and the suction spirit possessed a sucky doodad, so the mysterious pattern seems to be holding up.

I kind of thought ol' Whalefrog broke the pattern since his power was reflection based. Made no real sense going along with a plunger.

But yeah, the eraser ghost going into the pencil definitely upholds the trend.

His power is reflection based, but its also about pulling things out of things. He sort of sucks them out of stuff? And plungers pull clogs out of tubes using suction. Also, plungers cannot directly interact with the things they pull on before pulling it out and you cannot directly interact with reflections before they get pulled out, so it fits.

Besides, a toilet is a still pool of clean water, and everyone knows that still pools of clean water are reflective.

I think that the power is tampered by the object it is in. An example is the theory that Isabel's spirit in her book is a spider. If this is true it probably had the ability to make web and control it. Now that it is in a book, paper is it's webbing (that's why it eats books/paper, just like spiders eat their own web to recycle it.) Granted this is just a theory, but so far it fits.

What I actually meant to say - and I probably ought to be more specific in the future - is that Mr. Spender's power is light-based and it happens to be yellow. Though, to be fair, I DID notice all of that "thematic tool possessing" going on.

Mr Skyscraper's colours are probably purple.
It's the complimentary color to yellow.
His mind is in a delicate balance when involving colours.

Oh. Well then I have no idea. In fact, I can't make anything out of anything he said.

He doesnt want another yellow spirit to use him as a host, for some reason. (its because spirits can turn spectrals into mindslaves while possesing them/their tool if they are strong enough and/or the spectral is weak enough and fighting for dominance among multiple beings is obvs going to weaken someone but that hasnt been explicitly stated)

I think max is surprised because he shouldn't have to keep the paranatural a secret, since no one else can see it. Just a thought, though. I mean, if someone came up to you talking about this kind of stuff, wouldn't you think they were a bit crazy, instead of believing them?

Yes, but it can be proven. Some tools and abilities can be seen by everyone, including nonspectrals. They wont think your crazy if the magic bat works.

Well, that won't really prove that ghosts exist, will it? Any use of abilities non-spectrals see will just prove that powers exist, not really how they're gained or, the fact that ghosts and tools exist. Or at least i think so.

The power existing is usually a pretty clear indicator. It might not prove ghost exists, of course there be skeptics to that fact, but magic bat puts weight to his words, draws a crowd then eventually its on the news.

Lets not forget poltreigeists. They also affect the physical world, another proof point that can be used, (though to a less convenient and more dangerous degree.)

Also, it's probably not a good idea to tell a bunch of middle schoolers they can have superpowers if they *Almost* die, or if they eat so many oranges their stomachs start to bleed, or whatever. Especially not when the superpowers are real.
