| I'm a noob game developer, and I'd like to see who else makes video games!
We can also talk about video game making in general here, whether you make them or not. |

| Well, I wouldn't say I'm much of a video game maker, but I have dabbled in coding before, and also like video games. Does that qualify? |

| Hmm probably not, but it's alright. It's cool if you want to just poke around coding for a bit just to try it.
To be honest, the reason why I probably stuck with it is because I find it pretty fun to try and solve problems logically to get what you want to work. It thrills me. <3
So what kind of coding have you explored? |

| Welp, I've done a bit with HTML and CSS, and also Javascript. Made a couple of things, like a website and a (very simple) text-based choose-your-adventure type game. The website isn't actually on the internet though, it's just a bunch of files on my computer. I've also messed around with a fairly simple AI for this thing called Vindinium.
All of that was in a computer science class I took one year, and we had a bit of an AI competition through Vindinium. Mine won, and I am very pleased about that. |

| That's cool that your AI won! I haven't practiced much with AI yet, so it might be a challenge for me at first, but I imagine it will still be fun.
I only know some GML (GameMaker Language) through GameMaker. I tried learning JavaScript once through a site called CodeAcademy. Admittedly it was a little frustating due to old habits, but I was driven to quit when one of the site's functions broke.
It was some catalog function which made what you code show up in a gray box to the side of the lesson. I couldn't go to the next lesson even though i did exactly what the wanted me to, just cuase nothing would show up in that box. I even went back to the first lesson it showed up in (which had the correct answer still in it) but I clicked the submit button and nothing. I couldn't advance anymore cause it was broken, so I quit. ;w; That was like 5 or so years ago when I was still in school. |

| Aw that sucks. I actually used CodeAcademy last year, in a Computer Science course. I don't think we went through the whole JavaScript lesson, though. And the AI wasn't really too complicated, once I had the basics of how stuff worked down. |

| At least I have GML to code with for now. To me it doesn't matter what you use to make games, as long as the games are fun then you can use anything.
And yeah, AI can sometimes seem more complicated than it actually is. Congrats on winning that contest thing though! |

| Yeah, I think that's a pretty good policy on game-making. "If it's fun, then it's good." or something like that.
Thank you for the congratulations, though it's been a year or so since I messed around with code... |

| I've been coding since I was very little; it can be a lot of fun. I've only briefly used Game Maker, but it seems pretty nice. I spent a summer a couple of years ago trying to make a platformer MMO game, but it's a lot of work for one person so I didn't get TOO far. It was kind of playable though! |

| As far as I recall it wraps a lot of the logic and coding of making a game in a user interface so you can make stuff happen more easily instead of making everything from scratch.
(I also might have been thinking of RPG Maker, but now that I think about it I used Game Maker for a 48-hour Game Jam once so I guess I've used that about the same amount.) |

| Yeah from what I hear, making games in GameMaker is easier, but it's not brain-dead easy if you're making something that isn't all that simple to code.
So what kind of games have you guys worked on? (Whether you finished them or not) |

| Well, I've only ever worked on (and finished) the text-based adventure thing, though it's essentially just a huge switch statement. |

| Ah. What kind of adventure was it? Like fantasy? Sci-fi?
I have many projects that I work on sometimes, I'll probably talk about them later in detail. Lately I've been into projects that involve using cards/card games since my main project revolves around a made up card game.
Long ago when I first got into game making, I was trying to make some bad game where each level is a random short game. It was kinda a bad idea, but I never really worked on the 2nd level cause I was having too much fun playing the first level haha. You had to go around collecting colorful eggs when black/evil eggs move all around you. If you got hit with a bad egg, you lose, and everytime you pick up an egg, it spawns another bad egg you have to dodge. It was fun. I lost the game when my computer got a virus though. I miss it. |

I tried to write an online platformer game in Java a couple of summers ago. Turns out it's pretty hard for a single person. I got a bunch of stuff done, though, it was fairly neat, heh. Had to write my own mapmaker too, etc. |

| Your games all sound a lot cooler than the simple, boring stuff I ever made. Also, it was very much a fantasy adventure, though the story's kinda weird I guess? |

| It's alright. Starting out simple is the first step. But like I think as long as you're having fun, it's all good. You dont have to beat yourself up if someone is better than you at something, if you really like doing that thing then MAKE THEM A RIVAL YOU WANT TO COMPETE WITH SOMEDAY! Train your pokemon skills and you'll get stronger! Anyway, please don't feel bad, just have fun, it's what Ash Ketchum would want!
Anyway, text adventures can be fun and interactive. And I believe a unique or weird twist on things can be enjoyable to read. So do tyou remember what was "weird" about it?
When it comes to making games, I seem to always want to have things randomized, or put some type of randomization in. I just find it a little bit thrilling. You think you got a certain enemy's patterns down? Nope, here's a new one! It can keep you on your toes, or makes each enemy seem more real and different. (Though I put randomization in more than just enemies. Kinda. I haven't made an enemy in forever haha ;w; ) |

| Yay randomization!
Thank you for that very inspirational paragraph. Ash Ketchum would be proud!
I just had a weird story... though to be honest I worked on the game with two other people, and my branch was by far the longest. I think I find it weird because of the pacing, but I'm not entirely sure... I'd have to take another look at it first.
Also, you die very very easily. |

| Heh. There are some popular games out there where you die alot.
I don't really know what else to say, so I'll say that I'm thinking of making videos of me doing gamedev stuff, mostly just working on some of my projects. My computer is really old, so the only way I can record my screen without lag makes things a little blurry, but at least you can make out what most of the small words in GameMaker are. Don't know when I'll get around to it though. |

| That sounds cool! If you ever get around to doing that I'd consider taking a look, when I'm not working on schoolwork or watching anime, that is. |

| Hey, so I made a blog post about a kind of game idea I had and some specific thoughts about it, so I'm just gonna dump the post here for people to read. - Quote :
- For a couple of days now I've been thinking of an idea for a game where you input some commands, and the main game plays itself for you to watch. I want this mostly cause I can't be at the computer long with my back problems, but there's also an influence of me liking to watch stuff when I'm eating, and I currently dont have internet on my computer to look up new things to watch.
I've been thinking of this idea occasionally, and I think I now have a good concept idea for how this can work.
This is for a kind of actiony game, but the premise is that the player will be given alot of info about the stages they can choose to do. Info on enemies, other stage elements, possible missions to complete, rewards for said missions, ect.
This info will encourage the player to plan accordingly to try and predict what will get them the results they want. Then once they hit go, they'll watch attentively to see if their planning results in what they want or not.
I feel like this is how a watching game can be fun. Let me know what you think, and if there are some games that do this pretty good, please tell me about them, I'd really like to check them out! |

| I dunno about games that do that already, that sounds like a pretty innovative idea!
I think that sounds really cool. If done the right way, it should be a pretty good game concept. |
