Every forum needs 'em.

Pros:

• Encourages self-expression & creativity
  
• Good way to get in-jokes out of your system without flooding threads
  
• Not everyone likes default titles, even higher-echelon ones
  
• Discourages post-whoring for better default titles because... well, see cons

Cons:

• Kind of obsoletes the default titles.
  
• ...That's pretty much it lol

Of course the cons are from the user's perspective; depending on the forum host, sometimes the function is awkward to code. But if they are implemented, probably wise to make the post req. to have one exceedingly low. Something that can be achieved with a few days' worth of invested, yet reasonable posting. I've actually been on a lot of forums where you earn the privilege with your first post. In my experience, forums with an absurd requirement to have one tend to encourage cliques, and people will spam to get them, same as ordinary titles.

I've been on forums with and without em'. I like them, but post-count types are good as well.

That's my extremely middling two cents.

I don't know, I like that titles are earned, not given. It's not like anyone has resorted to spamming yet or anything.

I think I might be able to put them in, but the method I'm seeing looks to have it in addition to the current rank titles, instead of replacing them outright. Would that work?

Yeah no that's the ideal, and usually how it's done. If the person doesn't specify their own title, then whatever default title is appropriate for them is displayed. Sorry, could've made that clearer haha.

Or did you mean both would display at once? If so that's... interesting. Maybe it could be test-run.

I saw one forum that awarded custom titles as prizes for winning contests, but that was three or four years ago.

Ehh... Not sure about titles as awards. Imo profile functions should be something for the whole forum to enjoy. Awards are great, but I think things like badges would be better for that. (Which I have also seen done a lot actually.)

Above and below is a pretty good system, I'd say.

Honestly, I just like games and contests. Incidentally, what do you mean by badges? I hope they aren't the sort that appear near your avatar and take up a bunch of space, I always found those kind of annoying. Also good for rewards: coloured titles, but those are more a mod thing.

Personally I don't think the order significantly matters.

Sorry for the wait, surprise visit to my grandparents over the weekend. Title options can be found where you edit your profile. Wish I could get rid of the "Title:" that inevitably comes with it, but there's not much I can do about it for now. Thoughts?
